Which Fear Is Holding You Back?
Courage is about facing your fears.
We all have them, there's nothing wrong with that, it's human. But often the difference between success and failure, happiness and dissatisfaction, fulfilment and emptiness, is having the courage to take on the challenge that makes you afraid.
A fear of my heart stopping was keeping from from jumping into the Irish Sea where my friends were enjoying the cool water on a hot summer's day a couple of years ago. I was sat on the edge of the boat for half an hour before I finally did it. What happened next isn't important. Later on, when I was reflecting on it, it struck me that no one else actually knew what I was going through. Probably they didn't care. It was all in my head. The drama, I mean. My own internal battle, and finally I won. It gave me great satisfaction. A fear conquered, a new challenge met, a new ability gained. And it all took place between my ears.
This is just a small example, but to me it felt like life and death. Imagine what you can achieve by taking on your own fears. Fear of approaching a girl in bar, fear of asking for a pay rise or applying for a promotion, fear of ending a toxic relationship or fear of missing a four foot putt.
Can you think of a time when you faced a fear and pushed through it? Share with me in the comments below.
And one final thought. All these fears can be described in a certain way. Fear of failure. And there's also a different way to look at them. I'm going to discuss that aspect in a future post, so keep a look out for it in your news feed.
