Just Do It, Badly
One of my key messages to clients and readers is to 'just get started'.
There will never be the right time, you will never be ready. So just get started, and see how you go.
It's a great way to get going in anything, and I have been living it as best I can in recent times.
I read about an enhancement to this phrase the other day, and it inspired me to write this piece relating my experience over the last week.
The new phrase is...Do It Badly. Here's what happened...
I'm launching an online coaching course to allow people access to the benefits of life coaching in the comfort of their home and office, where they can work at their own pace.
I asked several of my family and friends to test pilot the program for me, from signing up to completion.
And you could say that it's gone fairly wrong at the first hurdle.
The sign-up process does not work, and no-one was able to create an account and activate the course.
I remained calm as this unfolded in front of me, and found a way to work round it.
I could manually create accounts and activate the course for the several people who tried to sign up. And they are now participating and having a good experience with the course itself. So that bit works.
So when I look back, I can see that I wasn't ready, the process hadn't been properly tested, and I went for it anyway, and did it badly. And I embrace that. I'm actually delighted.
Because I moved forward. I'm that much closer to my objective of producing and selling a series of online courses so that anyone, anywhere, can have the Best Mate experience.
And importantly, I embraced the fact that it wasn't going to perfect. I was OK with that.
And I'll do it better next time, you can be sure of that.
One thing I'm sure of, if I hadn't just got started, I'd still be waiting until I was ready, and waiting, and waiting...
So next time you are wondering about whether the time is right, just get started and do it badly.
